Why We Do What We Do: Understanding Self-Motivation

by Deci

This book is motivation 101. In plain terms it helps the reader to understand the factors contributing to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This small book is a “good read.”

Measurements

Very few personality inventories measure persistence directly. However, persistence is measured as a subscale on other inventories. For example, there is a persistent subscale as part of the Self-Control Scale (Tangney, Baumeister, & Boone).

Examples of items that measure persistence are:

  • I am not easily discouraged.
  • I am able to work effectively toward long-term goals.
  • I get carried away by my feelings.
  • People would say I have iron self-discipline.
